Channelview ISD Counseling Program

Our Mission

The Channelview ISD Counseling & Social Emotional Learning Department is dedicated to inspiring and empowering all students, families, educators, and the community.
Our mission is to unlock each student’s potential by supporting academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and college and career readiness—helping every learner reach success in school and beyond.
We believe every student deserves a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes confidence, character, and lifelong learning.

Our Counseling Philosophy

Channelview ISD counselors work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to create a school climate where all students feel valued and supported.

Our comprehensive counseling program follows the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, ensuring that services are:
  • Proactive and preventive
  • Equitable and inclusive
  • Data-driven and results-oriented
  • Delivered by certified professional school counselors

Program Components

Our district’s counseling program includes a wide range of supports and services designed to meet the developmental needs of all students:
1. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mental Health Support
Counselors teach skills such as self-management, relationship-building, and decision-making through classroom lessons and small-group activities.
At the high school level, SEL counseling provides:
  • Individual and short-term counseling
  • Small-group sessions focused on coping, self-esteem, and peer relationships
  • Crisis intervention and referrals to community resources
  • Parent and staff workshops on wellness and resilience

2. Academic and College/Career Advising
Counselors help students set academic goals, monitor progress, and explore post-secondary options.
Services include:
  • Graduation planning and course selection
  • College and career exploration
  • Test preparation and study skills guidance
  • Transition planning between elementary, middle, and high school

3. Responsive Counseling Services
When personal challenges interfere with learning, counselors provide confidential support and connect students and families with additional help.
Responsive services include:
  • Individual or group counseling
  • Crisis intervention
  • Collaboration with families, teachers, and outside agencies

4. Collaboration and System Support
Counselors work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes teachers, administrators, and community partners.
They also coordinate with the Student Services Department, which encompasses programs such as Section 504, Advanced Academics, and mental health partnerships with agencies like Harris County and The Harris Center.

District-Wide Counseling Services

Channelview ISD employs professional school counselors across all campuses to ensure consistent support at each grade level:
  • Elementary Schools – Focus on social skills, self-confidence, friendship, and emotional regulation.
  • Junior High Schools – Emphasize academic planning, transition support, and group counseling.
  • High School – Offer college and career advising, SEL counseling, and crisis support.
Each campus counselor provides lessons, workshops, and interventions that address the needs of their specific student population.

Our Commitment

Channelview ISD counselors are committed to:
  • Upholding ethical and professional standards as set by ASCA and TEA
  • Maintaining student confidentiality and trust
  • Promoting equity and access for all learners
  • Using data and continuous improvement to strengthen programs

We believe counseling is essential to student success and personal growth, and we are proud to serve every student, every day.
