Personal Counseling Philosophy

As a professional counseling student, I believe that dignity, worth, and the capability to learn, grow, and achieve effectiveness exist in all students when appropriate support and encouragement are provided. Each student possesses special strengths, gifts, and potential, and it is my goal to assist in the discovery and development of these qualities. I believe that race, culture, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability are factors that must be recognized and respected in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive school counseling program. The honor of diversity and the promotion of equality must be an effort that provides every student with equal access to opportunities for academic, personal, and social growth.

I believe that a comprehensive, goal-directed, and data driven school counseling program which meets the academic, social/emotional, and career development needs of all students is essential. These programs should be designed and evaluated in terms of the unique needs of the school community they serve, and integrated into the total educational program of the school. Success for students requires cooperation and shared accountability among students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members who share in the goal of the healthy development of every child.

As a professional counseling student, I will listen with understanding, show compassion, and esteem the uniqueness of each student. I will strive to maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment to meet the academic, social, emotional, creative, and physical needs of all individuals. I will note a commitment to the concepts of confidentiality and the ethical guidelines prescribed by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), except when warranted by a duty to warn, suspected abuse, or legal compulsion.

I will serve as an advocate, leader, collaborator, and consultant, facilitating the development of potential in students and preparing them to be ready for continuing education, career, and community living. I will help to develop the positive climate within the school through the attainment of counseling-related goals that coincide with the goals of the school in general. I will engage continually in the pursuit of my professional development in the hope of upgrading my skills and awareness in relation to the changing paradigms of education.

Consequently, I believe that the function of the school counselor is to empower each student this positive experiences in respect to mental health, wellness, educational effectiveness, and career readiness. Through purposeful, data-informed, and ethical practices, it is my intention to magnify the favorable components of their experiences while providing the necessary support in overcoming problematic experiences that should lead them to the place where all students can expect to shine as responsible, productive, and resilient members of society.
